School is compulsory from 1 September for all children who will have reached the age of 7 before 1 October of the active year, until they have completed basic education or have reached the age of 17. Useful information for when your child starts school

Starting school is undoubtedly a joyful occasion for a young person! The parish will ensure the opportunity to acquire basic education for those it is compulsory for and whose place of residence, according to the population register, is located within its administrative territory. To this end, the local government assigns each child to a municipal school considering the proximity of the student's place of residence to the school, what school the other children in the same family attend and, if possible, the parents' wishes. According to the Basic Schools and Upper Secondary Schools Act, the chosen municipal school may be located either in the administrative territory of the parish where the child’s place of residence is located or in the administrative territory of another parish or city, if the local government running the school agrees to it.
